Broadleaf Commerce

Broadleaf Commerce is an open source framework for building customized eCommerce solutions. Hear how The Container Store and Pep Boys utilized Broadleaf Commerce to enable their successful eCommerce implementations.

Broadleaf Commerce 3.0 - The Best eCommerce Framework for Custom Commerce Development Just Got Better!

Not since launching the Broadleaf Commerce framework in 2009 have we had a more significant release. Version 3.0 continues our goal of providing the best platform for custom commerce development.

Our team started this release with three major objectives that were heavily influenced by community and customer feedback.

    • Removing the technical debt from our admin
    • Simplify common customizations
    • Increase the modularity of the framework overall
    • Broadleaf Commerce v3.0 Private Demo
    • 3.0 Objective #1: Remove technical debt

  • .

Technical debt is costly but hidden issues for many companies. In a 2010, article, a Gartner report estimated global technical debt at $500 billion dollars. The problem with technical debt is that it is hard to justify the cost to remove it. The benefits are difficult to justify in the scope of a single project. On the flip side, the longer the debt lasts, just like a credit card, the higher the interest compounds the problem.

At Broadleaf, we make technical stack decisions with the enterprise architect in mind. Our senior architecture team consists of engineers who have built enterprise commerce systems for over ten years. When choosing GWT as our admin platform, we felt it was the best alternative at the time for building a robust, desktop like application for managing products, offers, and content. Many Broadleaf Commerce developers chose us for our Spring based architecture and found working in the GWT based admin to be difficult. As we added in more features to the admin, we found that our development velocity suffered largely due to the technology and development patterns it required.

So, we made the difficult decision to remove this technical debt from Broadleaf Commerce and to rebuild our admin using a fully Spring MVC compatible solution. While we could have spent this time building commercial features and potentially selling more services and licensed products in the short-term, we strongly believe that this was the right decision for us and for you to make this investment.

We are now benefiting from faster development velocity, faster build times, and faster runtime execution of the framework. We expect to see an ROI on removing this technical debt within the year. Your ROI, as a Broadleaf Commerce customer / developer will be almost immediate.

3.0 Objective #2: Simplify Broadleaf Customization

The Broadleaf Commerce framework is designed to support almost any type of customization. That being said, there are certain types of customizations that keep coming up. We've made an effort in version 3.0 to simplify several of these common customizations. Here are a couple of examples:

    Workflow configuration

Broadleaf Commerce offers easily extensible workflows where you can add custom logic to operations like add to cart and submit order. Prior to 3.0, extending workflows required you to copy and modify the out of box configuration. With 3.0, we provide a way to modify workflows without the negative side effects of copying the out of box configuration.

    Annotation based admin configuration

While in 3.0, developers can extend any part of the admin by creating custom SpringMVC controllers and views, the fact is you probably won't have to. We provide an elegant admin annotation library that allows developers to build complex admin UIs by annotating a JPA domain. For example, with a line or two of annotation / configuration, users can reorder fields, remove fields, or even add new fields or structures.

In addition, we are currently soliciting feedback from business users who utilize our enterprise admin every day. In future dot releases of 3.x, you'll see the benefits of these usability studies making their way into the product.

Broadleaf Commerce >> Increase Modularity :
    3.0 Objective #3: Increase Modularity

Customers using an enterprise commerce framework have to be concerned about upgradability. Early adopters of Broadleaf Commerce found that we were adding features to the core framework at a pace that was difficult for their internal development team to keep up with.

We made several changes to our development process and to the product in general to address this concern. First, we now are adding most new functionality via "modules". These modules represent code that can be weaved into the Broadleaf Commerce solution as needed. For example, Broadleaf Commerce provides an Inventory module. If you want to use that module, you can easily weave that module into your solution. If you don't need that module, you won't be forced to use an upgrade that includes that feature.

Investing in a modular architecture provides the following benefits:
    • Upgrades to the core framework will be less frequent and only when absolutely necessary
    • Customers add only the features they need when they need them
    • Partners and independent broadleaf commerce developers will be able to develop their own modules

  • .

The 3.0 release of Broadleaf Commerce provides tremendous benefits to current and prospective users of the framework We've positioned the admin with a technology that is more flexible, modern, and extensible than any other commerce platform.

We've enabled a modular approach that will allow us to grow the platform without requiring customers to undergo major upgrades but also empowering them to absorb significant commerce features on a timeline that they choose

We are excited about this release and think that the closer you look, the more you will be as well. We look forward to continuing to serve the Broadleaf Commerce community and customers.

    KonaKart :

KonaKart is a java eCommerce system aimed at medium to large online retailers. The KonaKart product is owned by DS Data Systems UK Ltd with staff in Italy and the UK.

KonaKart provides an extensive set of features to enable retailers to successfully sell their products over the internet. It is a Java / JSP / XML based solution with easy to use java APIs and a SOAP Web Service interface that allow retailers to quickly integrate eCommerce functionality into existing systems. The customizable parts of KonaKart are Open Source and available under the GNU LGPL.

KonaKart includes both a Storefront application and an AJAX-enabled Administration Application. The Administration Application includes role-based security which allows companies to define the administrative functions that should be allowed for different user groups.

    Key Features of KonaKart include:
    • Comprehensive eCommerce / shopping cart functionality
    • Ease of integration through its complete set of java, SOAP, JSON and RMI APIs
    • Ease of creation of unique storefronts by using the jQuery / javascript libraries
    • Ease of customization - with examples, tutorials and source code available
    • High performance, scalability and reliability
    • Ability to run as a JSR-168 portlet - e.g. in Liferay
    • Wide choice of supported databases (MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, DB2, MS SQL Server)

  • .

There are two versions of KonaKart:

The Community Edition of is free and can be downloaded from the KonaKart website. The Enterprise Extensions Edition is chargeable and has more features that tend to appeal to larger Enterprises.

KonaKart includes a sophisticated browser based administration application. It uses AJAX technology to provide a snappy user interface while the maintaining all of the advantages of running the application from a browser. The intuitive interface includes an on line help system to improve productivity and to quickly give you the hints you need for those tasks which aren’t performed on a daily basis.

Since KonaKart was developed for enterprise customers, it incorporates a security subsystem with role based security. Each user can be assigned one or more roles that determine access to the available functionality with read / insert / edit and delete granularity. The user name / password based access, has the facility to block users for a programmable period after a number of unsuccessful login attempts.

Auditing may be enabled for all Admin App API calls with two levels of detail. All audit data is stored in the KonaKart database and may be browsed and filtered from within the application.

The Admin App is fully internationalized and can be translated via a message catalog.

Performance is always at the top of our priority list. Our goal from day one has been to produce a reliable, high performance product that has the capability of tracking your requirements as your on line business grows in popularity. The aim of KonaKart is to make your business a success and then to help you improve on that success by allowing you to manage a high traffic on line store with tens or hundreds of thousands of products. Benchmark tests on modest hardware have shown that KonaKart can effortlessly manage a throughput of many orders per second.

One way that a customer perceives performance is through fast UI response times. In order to maximize the available resources, we take care in caching data where appropriate at multiple levels within the application. Another performance factor is robustness so that your store experiences as little down time as possible and behaves as you would expect it to, regardless of the load. Our underlying technology is based on Java which is the technology being used by thousands of enterprise applications all over the world, on a daily basis.

A typical KonaKart installation consists of a couple of application servers providing load balancing and failover. KonaKart is easy to replicate using industry standard load balancing techniques and the number of replicates can grow in parallel with your business growth.

    Hardware Architecture

KonaKart software resides on the application servers. Each physical application server may contain multiple instances of KonaKart.

Each instance of KonaKart can communicate with other applications through a SOAP Web Service, RMI interface or JSON.

Each web server can forward requests to any KonaKart instance. However, once a session has been established, all subsequent requests must be passed to the same instance since the store-front application retains state for that session.

All application servers must point to the same database server which can be a cluster to provide fault tolerance.

KonaKart is designed with integration in mind so it has a wide range of features that make this easy to achieve.

Most businesses will have a number of different systems that are essential to their operations. More often than not these systems will work best if they can communicate with one another without human interactions.

For example, you may wish to take your orders in KonaKart using the web-based store front but then move these orders directly to your warehouse or shipping system for further processing.

All KonaKart functionality is available through APIs (Java, SOAP, JSON or RMI) which can be used by other systems to communicate with KonaKart. We’ve seen that this approach can be used successfully for the front end, to integrate with portals and content management systems, as well as the back end to integrate with ERP and Order Management Systems. KonaKart has been integrated successfully with front end systems such as Liferay, dotCMS, OpenCMS, Magnolia CMS, DAY CQ, Yanel CMS and 3Spices CMS.

    Industry Standard Integration
    KonaKart APIs

One popular interfacing technique that external systems can use to communicate with KonaKart is using KonaKart’s “SOAP web services”. This allows systems written in just about any technology (on any platform) to communicate with KonaKart using industry standard programming techniques.

The SOAP web service interfaces could be used, for example, to update your products offered for sale by KonaKart from another system that holds stock information. Another use could be to send orders to KonaKart from other systems, perhaps in a B2B environment.

The APIs are also offered using Java RMI (Remote Method Invocation) and JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). RMI allows distributed Java to Java communication where the sender and receiver may be on different virtual machines. JSON is a lightweight data-interchange format popular for writing mobile applications. The JSON APIs are only available for the Application Engine and not for the Administration Engine.

Some integrations are provided 'out-of-the-box' such as the integration with Google Base ' which allows you to publish your products in Google, and the integration with Open CMS ' a popular open source content management system.

    JavaScript jQuery eCommerce Store-Front Integration
All of the KonaKart store-front APIs are available in a JavaScript library which allows integration of eCommerce functionality into any browser based application. The APIs use asynchronous AJAX technology in order to provide an elegant and smooth customer experience. Find out more from the download page.

    facebook Shopping Widgets

The KonaKart Shopping Widget allows you to increase the visibility of your products to a wider audience by simply inserting a few lines of JavaScript into a facebook page or a page of a blog. The widget allows your customers to view product information including reviews, manage the cart and to start the checkout process. An affiliate code may be added to the widget in order to reward affiliate partners. See a demo here.

    MQ Integration

To support the guaranteed delivery of messages to external systems the Apache ActiveMQ java message queue has been integrated (Enterprise Extensions only).

Apache ActiveMQ : 'The most popular and powerful open source messaging and Integration Patterns provider'.

A typical example of where this might be useful is where you wish to transfer orders to another system via a message queue once your orders have reached a certain status (eg. once payment has been received). According to their web site, Apache ActiveMQ is the most popular and powerful open source messaging and Integration Patterns provider. ActiveMQ fully supports JMS 1.1 with support for transient, persistent, transactional and XA messaging.

Designed for Integration - from the very beginning

There are many examples of how KonaKart can co-operate with other systems in your IT architecture. We expect customers to need to integrate their eCommerce system with their other systems in flexible ways, so KonaKart has been carefully designed from the very beginning to make this easy to achieve.

    Portlets - Liferay

We realize that many of you require eCommerce functionality integrated within your portal server or Content Management System. For this reason we have integrated KonaKart with some popular products that support the JSR 286 portlet specification. Our most popular portal platform is Liferay for which you can create portlets for the storefront and the Administration Application of KonaKart.

The portlets can be created by running an Ant task once the Community Edition of KonaKart has been downloaded and installed. Full instructions can be found in the on line documentation. A KonaKart portlet may also function correctly in other portals supporting JSR 286 although these haven’t been tested.

An example OpenCMS integration module may be downloaded which demonstrates how the KonaKart SOAP APIs can be called from within OpenCMS to provide a seamless integration. Modules for integrating with Magnolia CMS, dotCMS and Hippo CMS are also available.

    Apache OFBiz :

    Apache OFBiz

Apache OFBiz (The Apache Open For Business Project) is an open source enterprise automation software project licensed under the Apache License Version 2.0. By open source enterprise automation we mean: Open Source ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), Open Source CRM (Customer RelationShip Management), Open Source E-Business / E-Commerce, Open Source SCM (Supply Chain Management), Open Source MRP (Manufacturing Resources Planning), Open Source CMMS/EAM (Maintenance Management System/Enterprise Asset Management), Open Source POS (Point Of Sale), and so on.

Apache OFBiz is a foundation and starting point for reliable, secure and scalable enterprise solutions. Use it out-of-the-box (OOTB) or customize to suit even your most challenging business needs. With OFBiz in place, you can get started right away and then grow your operations as your business grows, without the huge deployment and maintenance costs of traditional enterprise automation systems.

Being open source under the Apache 2.0 license and driven by a community Apache OFBiz offers both flexibility by design and by access to code, and a solution where you're not alone but rather can work with many others to get things done. It's hard to say who and how many organizations are using Apache OFBiz because they don't have to tell us when they use it. In the documentation page you'll find link to a Wiki page with the list of known sites and products based on OFBiz we know about ("Users of Apache OFBiz").

Apache OFBiz is a framework, provides a common data model and a rich set of business process. All applications are built around a common architecture using common data, logic and process components. Beyond the framework itself, Apache OFBiz offers functionality including:

    • Accounting (Agreements, Invoicing, Vendor Management, General Ledger)
    • Asset Maintenance
    • Catalogue and Product Management
    • Facility and Warehouse Management
    • Manufacturing
    • Order Processing
    • Inventory Management, automated stock replenishment etc.
    • Content management system (CMS)
    • Human resources (HR)
    • People and Group Management
    • Project Management
    • Sales Force Automation
    • Work Effort Management
    • Electronic point of sale (ePOS)
    • Electronic commerce (eCommerce)
    • Scrum (development) (Scrum software development support)

  • .

All of Apache OFBiz functionality is built on a common framework. The functionality can be divided into the following distinct layers:

    Presentation Layer

Apache OFBiz uses the concept of "screens" to represent the Apache OFBiz pages. Each page is, normally, represented as a screen. A page in Apache OFBiz consists of components. A component can be a header, footer, etc. When the page is rendered all the components are combined together as specified in the screen definition. Components might be Java Server Pages ([JSP]s), FTL pages built around FreeMarker template engine, Forms and Menus Widgets. Widgets are an OFBiz specific technology.

    Business Layer

The business, or application layer defines services provided to the user. The services can be of several types: Java methods, SOAP, simple services, workflow, etc. A service engine is responsible for invocation, transactions and security. Apache OFBiz uses a set of well established, open source technologies and standards such as Java, Java EE, XML and SOAP. Although Apache OFBiz is built around the concepts used by Java EE, many of its concepts are implemented in different ways; either because Apache OFBiz was designed prior to many recent improvements in Java EE or because Apache OFBiz authors didn’t agree with those implementations.

    Data Layer

The data layer is responsible for database access, storage and providing a common data interface to the Business layer. Data is accessed not in Object Oriented fashion but in a relational way. Each entity (represented as a row in the database) is provided to the business layer as a set of generic values. A generic value is not typed, so fields of an entity are accessed by the column name.

Apache OFBiz offers a great deal of functionality, including:
    • advanced e-commerce
    • catalog management
    • promotion & pricing management
    • order management (sales & purchase)
    • customer management (part of general party management)
    • warehouse management
    • fulfillment (auto stock moves, batched pick, pack & ship)
    • accounting (invoice, payment & billing accounts, fixed assets)
    • manufacturing management
    • general work effort management (events, tasks, projects, requests, etc)
    • content management (for product content, web sites, general content, blogging, forums, etc)
    • a maturing Point Of Sales (POS) module using a rich client interface
    • and much more all in an open source package!

A set of tag libraries in the view layer exposes business entities and CMS APIs to JSP pages. 90% of the catalogue is built using Struts 2 tag libraries. JQuery plugins are used for extending UI with rich features such as modal windows and photos viewers. DWR library is used to facilitate Ajax calls with business components.

Struts action classes are MVC entries to all functionalities, they use the service layer to create transactions and query data from the database. Shopizer uses the concept of ‘module‘ for decoupling with the code and easing the integration with plug and play pieces of functionality. Integration with third party systems such as shipping quotes and payment systems are implemented using Shopizer’s module framework.

The system heavily uses Spring IOC and Transaction annotations. Business objects are Hibernate pojos retreived from an associated DAO all grouped in a service facade exposed to Struts action classes and modules. Shopizer supports HSQLDB, Oracle and MySQL databases.

The system is built on Struts 2, Hibernate and Spring. It uses Hibernate Search / Lucene for indexing and searching. Apache Commons libraries are used for doing common routines. Carrier-grade performance.

Commerce Engine has been battle-tested by the world’s most demanding customers - a mobile operator with 150 million subscribers, a publisher that adds over 20,000 titles each month, and a Top 50 digital retailer that is a key component of the Compuware® Gomez performance index.

The right way to enhance CMS.

For businesses with a big investment in content management systems like OpenText® CEM or Adobe® Experience Manager, Commerce Engine gives you headless commerce capabilities that are designed to work side-by-side with your digital experience software.

No other ecommerce platform combines merchandising, monetization, and subscriber management into a single solution. This allows us to deliver the industry’s most robust capabilities for businesses that sell complex bundles of digital goods, physical products, and subscriptions. Elastic Path also handles the entire customer lifecycle for recurring revenue models - from plan composition to billing, activation, and analytics. Other solutions simply take an order and walk away.

Built to complement, not complicate, content management.

For businesses with a big investment in platforms like OpenText® CEM or Adobe® Experience Manager, Commerce Engine gives you headless monetization capabilities that are specifically designed to work side-by-side with your digital experience software. Using Cortex, Elastic Path can seamlessly mediate content and commerce in real time. The importance of international trade for economic development cannot be overemphasized. But free trade is not the best path to economic development. Trade helps economic development only when the country employs a mixture of protection and open trade, constantly adjusting it according to its changing needs and capabilities. Trade is simply too important for economic development to be left to free trade economists.
